Do You Need a Rental Car in Grand Cayman? A Guide to Staying Near Seven Mile Beach
The short answer
If you're staying near Seven Mile Beach, you probably don't need a rental car for your whole trip. The beach, a supermarket and plenty of places to eat are within walking distance, and the public bus runs right along West Bay Road.
Where a car earns its keep is in exploring the rest of the island. Rum Point, the East End, the quieter North Side beaches and the Crystal Caves are much easier to reach by car than by bus.
For most visitors, the best plan is simple: go car-free for most of the stay, then rent a car for a day or two when you want to explore.
What you can reach on foot from Governors Village
The everyday essentials are a short walk away. That's the real advantage of staying on the Seven Mile Beach Corridor rather than further out.
| Destination | Time from Governors Village | Best way there |
|---|---|---|
| Seven Mile Beach (Governors Beach) | 2 min | Walk |
| Supermarket | 3 min | Walk |
| Village Café & Bar | On site | Walk |
| Restaurants along West Bay Road | 3-5 min | Walk |
| George Town | 5 min | Drive, taxi or bus |
| Camana Bay | 8 min | Drive, taxi or bus |
| Owen Roberts International Airport | 12 min | Drive or taxi |
Times are as published on the Governors Village website; walking and drive times vary with traffic and pace.
On site, you also have a 60ft pool, a gym, a BBQ area and the Village Café, which serves breakfast, lunch and cocktails. On a beach day, you may not need transport at all.
Guests often mention this in their reviews. Several describe the beach as a few minutes' walk and say grocery stores and restaurants are close by.
Getting around without a car: buses and taxis
The public bus
Grand Cayman's public buses are privately run minibuses rather than large city buses. Routes 1 and 2 run between the George Town depot and West Bay along the Seven Mile Beach Corridor, and there are stops right by Governors Village on West Bay Road.
A few things to know before you ride:
- Fares are low. A journey along the corridor costs CI$2. Carry small notes; drivers generally accept US or Cayman dollars.
- Look for blue number plates. Licensed public buses have blue plates and a coloured route sticker on the front and back.
- You can flag one down. Buses stop at marked stops, and drivers will usually pull over for a wave along the route.
- There's no fixed timetable to plan around. Buses run up and down the corridor through the day, so a wait is usually short, but service is lighter in the evening, on Sundays and on public holidays.
- It's best for short hops. George Town, Camana Bay and West Bay are easy. Reaching the East End or North Side means a change at the George Town depot and a longer journey.
Taxis
Taxis are easy to find at the airport, the cruise terminal and the larger Seven Mile Beach resorts, and the Governors Village team can help you arrange one. Cayman taxis aren't metered. Fares are set by the government, so it's worth confirming the price before you set off.
The Island Go app lets you request a ride and see estimated pick-up times from your phone. It's a handy option for evenings, when buses are less frequent.
Getting from the airport
Owen Roberts International Airport is about a 12-minute drive from Governors Village. You have two practical options.
- Taxi. A dispatcher outside arrivals assigns taxis in turn. Expect to pay roughly US$20 to US$30 to the Seven Mile Beach area for a small group, depending on the number of passengers and luggage. Confirm the fare before you leave.
- Rental car. If you plan to drive during your stay, collect a car at the airport. Hertz Cayman offers airport pick-up and drop-off, and Governors Village guests receive 10% off Hertz rentals.
The public bus doesn't serve the airport terminal, so it isn't a realistic option with luggage.
Arrival times aren't a worry either. Governors Village uses digital, keyless self check-in, so you can arrive at any time and go straight to your apartment.
When renting a car makes sense
A car is worth it on the days you want to leave the Seven Mile Beach area. Consider renting if you plan to:
- Visit Rum Point, Starfish Point or Cayman Kai on the North Side
- Drive the East End coast, with stops at the blowholes and quieter beaches
- See the Crystal Caves, the Botanic Park or Pedro St. James
- Travel with young children, car seats or bulky beach and dive gear
- Visit several business locations in one day
What to know before you drive
- Cayman drives on the left. Many cars are left-hand drive imports, so take a few minutes to adjust before leaving the rental lot.
- Check the rental requirements. Drivers usually need to be at least 21 and have a valid licence and a credit card. Ask your rental company whether a visitor's driving permit is needed and what it costs.
- Roundabouts run clockwise. Give way to traffic coming from the right.
- Parking at Governors Village is free. Governors Village has complimentary on-site parking for guests.
Hertz Cayman is a few moments from Governors Village, which makes it easy to collect a car for a single day rather than paying for the whole trip. Governors Village guests get 10% off.
A simple plan for your stay
Match your transport to the trip you're actually taking. Here's how most of our guests do it.
| Type of stay | Car needed? | Suggested plan |
|---|---|---|
| Long weekend (3 to 4 nights) | No | Taxi from the airport, walk to the beach, bus to George Town or Camana Bay |
| One-week holiday | For 1 to 2 days | Go car-free most days; rent a car mid-week for Rum Point and the East End |
| Family or group trip | For a few days | Rent one larger vehicle for the group's day trips; walk to the beach the rest of the time |
| Business trip | Depends on meetings | Taxi or bus to George Town and Camana Bay; rent if you're visiting several sites |
| Month or longer | Often yes | Compare a weekly or monthly rental with taxi costs; many long-stay guests rent for part of the stay |
If you're unsure, start without a car. It's easy to add a rental for a day once you've settled in and seen how close everything is.
