Spending a Month in Grand Cayman: What to Look for in an Extended Stay Apartment
A month in Grand Cayman is a very different trip from a week. After the first few days, you stop being a visitor and start living here: buying groceries, doing laundry, working, and finding your favourite stretch of beach.
People stay for a month or more for all kinds of reasons. Some are working remotely through the northern winter, some are on a contract or project, and some are trying island life before deciding whether to move.
Whatever brings you, the accommodation that's perfect for a long weekend may not suit a month. This guide covers the everyday things that matter on a longer stay, and finishes with a checklist of questions to ask before you book.
Groceries and cooking
Eating out every day for a month in Cayman is expensive. A proper kitchen is the single biggest money-saver on a long stay.
Look for:
- A full kitchen, not a kitchenette. You'll want a full-size fridge, a cooktop, a microwave and a dishwasher.
- A supermarket you can walk to. Carrying a few bags home is easy when the shop is close; it's a chore if you need a car every time.
- Somewhere to cook outdoors. A shared BBQ makes for easy dinners on warm evenings.
At Governors Village, every apartment has a fully equipped kitchen with a refrigerator, built-in cooktop, microwave, dishwasher and quartz countertops. A supermarket is a three-minute walk away, and there's a BBQ area on site. For days off from cooking, the Village Café & Bar serves breakfast, lunch and grab-and-go.
Laundry and housekeeping
On a month-long stay, you'll do laundry most weeks. Ask where it is, how it's paid for and whether it's available every day. It's also worth knowing what cleaning is included, and whether you can add a mid-stay clean or a linen change.
At Governors Village, there's on-site paid laundry in the building, and the GV app shows laundry information alongside check-in and Wi-Fi details.
Packing tip: with laundry on site, you can pack for a week or ten days, not a month. Light, quick-drying clothes are ideal in Cayman's climate.
Working remotely
If you're working through your stay, your accommodation is also your office. Three things matter most.
- Internet you can rely on. Ask whether it's included, whether it covers the whole property, and how fast it is if you're on video calls all day.
- A place to work that isn't your bed. A desk or table in the apartment is the minimum. A separate workspace helps you keep work and downtime apart.
- Somewhere for calls and meetings. A quiet, professional room is useful for client calls or occasional in-person meetings.
Governors Village has complimentary high-speed internet throughout the property and a flexible workspace in each apartment. GV Workspace, on site, offers co-working areas with coffee and water, plus a boardroom for up to 8 and a meeting room for up to 4, bookable by the hour or day. Long-stay guests get co-working access, subject to availability.
One thing to plan around: Cayman is on Eastern Standard Time all year and doesn't observe daylight saving. That means it matches New York in winter and is an hour behind in summer.
Getting around for a month
Over a month, transport costs add up, so it pays to think about how you'll get around before you arrive.
- Walk for the everyday. From GV, the beach is two minutes away and the supermarket three.
- Use the bus along the corridor. Public buses run along West Bay Road to George Town and West Bay for CI$2 a journey, with stops right by GV.
- Use taxis for evenings and the airport. Fares are regulated rather than metered, so confirm the price first.
- Rent a car for part of the stay. A weekly or monthly rental makes island exploring easy. Hertz Cayman is moments from GV, offers weekly and monthly rentals, and GV guests get 10% off.
Governors Village also has complimentary on-site parking and bike racks.
Settling in and making it feel like home
The difference between a good month and a long one is often routine. A few things help you settle quickly:
- Space to unpack properly. Wardrobe and drawer space matter when you're not living out of a suitcase. Ask about storage for luggage, dive gear or a bike.
- A comfortable bed and a dark room. Good mattresses and blackout blinds make a real difference over four weeks.
- A daily rhythm. A morning swim, a workout, a regular coffee stop. Having a pool and gym on site makes this easy.
- People to talk to. Long stays can feel isolating. A place with shared spaces and events makes it easier to meet people.
- Help when something breaks. On-site management means a dripping tap gets fixed quickly.
Governors Village apartments are fully furnished and move-in ready, with hotel-grade mattresses, blackout blinds, air conditioning and smart TVs. On site there's a 60ft pool, a fully equipped gym, communal lounges, communal games and regular community events, with on-site management and maintenance support 7 days a week. See all amenities.
